Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens, better called Queen Latifah in the US, is an actress and rapper. Her performance as a singer, music as well as a film and television artist has garnered an impressive two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also won an Grammy Award and six other Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah, the daughter of an Newark New Jersey schoolteacher and a Newark New Jersey police officer Lancelot Owens Senior, was raised and born in Newark New Jersey. The couple divorced when Latifah was age of 10 years old. Latifah went to Catholic school in Newark, New Jersey and was raised by the Baptist Church. Latifah refers to gentle and generous. Her cousin gave it to her when she was aged eight. Latifah's height of 5'10" was enough to make her a formidable forward in high school. As part of a school production she performed the song Home from The Wiz. Latifah began beatboxing with the group known as Ladies Fresh. Latifah is among the first members of the Flavor Unit, which was at the time a group composed of MCs led by DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, made a recording of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. The recording was sent to Yo! MTV Raps, Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the song and made a deal with Latifah in 1988 to release her debut single Wrath of My Madness.
